HOW TO: Install Ubuntu 10.10

First let’s see what do we need:

Needs:

  • Ubuntu 10.10 CD

How to get it:

Now that we have all what we need, let us start.

The first step is to boot your PC with your CD in your CD-ROM. When the first welcome screen appears, press the “F12” key. Most of the computers work fine with “F12”, but as every rule, there is always an exception. So in case “F12” doesn’t work for you, just watch carefully on that screen and try to figure out which is the correct key you have to press. Normally the options are on the top right corner or bottom left corner.  What you have to look for is the option “BOOT OPTIONS” or “BOOT ORDER”, something similar.

Now that we are on the “BOOTING OPTIONS”, we are going to search for an option that says: CD-ROM or how ever your CD unit is called and press enter.

Ubuntu will start now and after some time you will get a Welcome/Installation screen.

Installation Screen

As you can see, on the left panel you choose your language and on the right panel you have two options: “Try Ubuntu” and “Install Ubuntu”. If you want to first try Ubuntu, go for “Try Ubuntu”. But in our case we will install Ubuntu straight away (because we already played with Ubuntu and we liked it) so choose “Install Ubuntu”.

Next screen will appear:

Preparing to install Ubuntu

This screen will just tell you if you have minimum required space (2.6 GB), if you are plugged into a power source and if you are connected to Internet. In my personal opinion, you should have all of them. Although with the first two is more than enough.

If you have Internet connection, then check the two boxes. Let’s continue. Press Forward.

Allocate Driver Space

In this screen we will go for “Specify partitions manually (advanced)” JUST BE CAREFUL!! DO NOT DO WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!!! I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE OR DATA LOST.

Next step is doing the partitions:

Here we will DELETE ALL DATA, so if you do not want to delete your data, stop right here. We will use the entire hard disk so as I said before, ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED. Do a backup of your data and then you can come back to proceed.

So now that we are sure that we want to proceed, select all the partitions that are there and delete them all. Now select “Free space” and click on “Add”.

The configuration should look like this:

  • “Type for the new partition” = Primary.
  • New partition size in megabytes = The number that appears MINUS 2x the amount of RAM memory you have. So if you have 512MB you have to subtract 1024 MB from the number that is given there. In my case I’m going to use 2x 800MB so 1578MB
  • Use as = “ext4”
  • Mount point = “/”

Click “OK”.

Once again select the “Free Space” and click on “Add”. The following options should be selected:

  • “Type for the new partition” = Primary.
  • New partition size in megabytes = 1578  (remember the 2x your RAM Memory?)
  • Use as = “Swap area”
  • Mount point = nothing, this will get blocked

Click on “Ok” and you will return to the partitioning screen. It should look something like this:

Partitioning final

Next screen is the Time Zone where you are. Select the country/city where you are. In my screen shot I’ll use “Los Angeles” as demonstration.

Location

We arrive now to the keyboard layout. You should run the “Figure out keyboard layout”. It will make some questions and will get you the exact layout of your current keyboard.

The following screen is most of the information about you. Your login name, your real name, your computer name, password, etc. Fill out those spaces and click on “Forward”. After this it will show again the whole configuration you just input. So just click again “Forward” and the installation will begin.

After installation is finish, your computer will restart. Your CD tray will open. Remove your Ubuntu CD, close the tray and press enter. Your computer will reboot and you will be welcome with Ubuntu login. Enter your credentials and enjoy Ubuntu 10.10!!!
